Supportive Work Program Instructor Job Summary 
This position is responsible for providing competency-based training to youth in a manner that prepares successful program graduates for entry-level employment in a variety of areas of occupational opportunities in the construction industry. Incumbent will participate collaboratively and professionally with staff to promote the general well-being of the youth and interest of the agency mission and vision. 

Essential Duties 
•         Remain current with emerging technology and changes effecting the industry
•         Learn and use technology to enhance teaching
•         Use effective competency-based teaching techniques, instructional materials, and appropriate  media support to conduct classroom lecture, course work and projects to prepare students with the practical skills essential for entry-level professional employment
•         Provide individualized instruction
•         Mentor, encourage, counsel and guide youth toward the completion of program requirements i.e., course assignments, interpersonal relationships, career goals and responsible work habits
•         Facilitate a process for on-going youth input for instructional and program improvement
•         Respond appropriately to student problems and provide assistance in solving them in accordance with college procedures
•         Manage the classroom in a manner that ensures a suitable learning environment
•         Ensure that appropriate safety practices are used at all times, youth are knowledgeable of safety techniques and all equipment is maintained in a safe working condition
•         Requisition and maintain control of and safeguard inventories of equipment and supplies assigned to the program
•         Evaluate and document youths’ competency attainment, course progress, attendance, work based learning experiences and workplace behaviors at least quarterly and in accordance with college policy and/or procedures
•         Maintain required written and computerized records and respond to requests for information in a timely manner
•         Maintain records of all “shop job" instructional projects
•         Maintain full program curriculum documentation in accordance with the approved agency format and ensure that instruction is consistent with current industry or business standards, technologies, procedures, equipment and materials
•         Plan and develop meaningful student learning experiences based upon current industry or business practices
•         Ensure that the training program requires the use of library or online resources and students acquire the ability to access and use these resources
•         Coordinate with other support services staff and advisory to ensure a cohesive learning environment dedicated to providing industry with qualified entry-level employees
•         Maintain friendly and cooperative relationships with respective industry
•         Cooperate with and assist administration in the promotion of the program
•         Attend staff meetings
•         Maintain familiarity with agency’s goals, mission, and core themes

Special Conditions 
•         Must pass a criminal history background check
•         Valid Pennsylvania State Driver’s License 
 

Job Requirements

Minimum Qualifications
•         Five (5) years of experience on the job
•         One (1) year of supervisory experience
•         Must communicate fluently both verbally and in writing

 
Allowable Substitution
If necessary, alternative combinations of education and experience may be evaluated by the Human Resources Office for comparability.

Preferred Qualifications
•         Industry related degree
•         Supervisory experience
•         Experience working with persons of disability and/or learning-disabled persons
•         Prior experience working for a major manufacturer as a service technician
•         Prior teaching in vocational atmosphere
•         Industry certifications preferred, but not required: NATE (A/C, ACE Service Technician), ARI/GAMA ICE (Residential Heating and Cooling, Light Commercial Heating and Cooling, Commercial Refrigeration)

•         Effectively teach youth in a manner that results in development of industry validated entry-level competencies
•         Demonstrate excellent verbal and written communication skills
•         Demonstrate and model appropriate and respectful workplace behaviors
•         Instruct a diverse youth population varying in ages (sixteen through mature adulthood), backgrounds and levels of experience in a manner that facilitates an effective learning environment
•         Market and promote program for purposes of continued program enrollment
•         Ability to communicate effectively with people at all levels, including the public
•         Operate personal computer using current software pertinent to program needs
•         Establish and maintain effective working relationships with persons from diverse backgrounds
•         Maintain regular and reliable attendance on the job

Work Environment
Majority of work is performed in a shop or classroom environment. The employee is occasionally exposed to outdoor weather conditions and varying noise levels.

•         May occasionally be required to deal with distraught people
